Wyndham City Council is responsible for maintaining local roads within its municipality, ensuring streets are kept in good condition and promptly cleaned of glass, mud, and oils. However, the council is not responsible for the maintenance of arterial roads or freeways. This is the responsibility of the roads authority Transport Victoria, formerly VicRoads.

Mud, oil and street sweeping

To remove mud or oil from the road, submit the Street sweeping or road cleaning request.

How does the street sweeper work?

The street sweeper is a large mobile vacuum cleaner. It has two small chutes on either side of the truck and a large chute under the body. Additionally, there are two round brooms on either side that help direct leaves and debris into the small chutes. This is the part of the sweeper that is usually visible to the public.

There is also a large tubular broom under the truck that guides debris into the large chute. Depending on the direction the driver is travelling, only one round broom/small chute is in operation at a time, typically the left-hand side. The debris is collected horizontally rather than vertically. This means that it can pick up leaves and debris from the curb, but it cannot remove debris from a pit lower than the curb.
