Asbestos is a fibrous mineral once widely used in building materials for its strength, fire resistance, and insulation. Manufacturing stopped in 1987, and it was fully banned in Australia by 2003.
The most common type found in homes is asbestos cement, which has low asbestos content and poses minimal risk if in good condition and undisturbed. Precautions are essential during renovations or maintenance.
Asbestos comes in two forms:
  • Friable: Loosely bound, often in insulation, and more likely to release harmful fibres.
  • Non-Friable: Tightly bound, found in sheets, roof tiles, pipes, and ceilings; it's safer unless damaged.
